Purpose
Marcus Whitman Elementary shall jointly develop, with parents and family members, a written Parent & Family Engagement Policy in accordance with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). This policy will outline how we will support strong partnerships between home and school to improve student achievement.
Communication & Availability
- Policy will be provided in an understandable, uniform format.
- Available in English, Spanish, and other languages represented by our families.
- Access: Posted on the State and Federal Programs website, available in the school office (print copies), shared electronically with families.
- Updates: Reviewed and updated periodically to meet changing needs.
Coordination with Other Programs
Marcus Whitman Elementary will integrate family engagement activities with:
- Public preschool/early education programs
- Special education programs
- Other Federal, State, and local programs
Parent Family Engagement Events
Annual Title I Parent Meeting
Held in the fall at Open House and Parent-Teacher Conferences.
Purpose: Inform parents of the school’s participation in Title I, Part A, review the Parent & Family Engagement Policy, and share parents’ rights to be involved in their child’s education.
Parents will receive:
- Timely information about Title I program supports
- Curriculum overviews and assessment explanations
- Student achievement expectations
- Opportunities for input and decision-making
- Information on extra tutoring in reading and math
Scheduling & Notice: Multiple meeting times/dates offered; notices sent via email, ParentSquare, and flyers sent home.
Parent Input in Planning & Evaluation
Parent & Family Engagement Policy Review: Reviewed annually at the Annual Title I Meeting and/or Title I Parent & Family Engagement Evaluation; parents from all demographic groups encouraged to participate.
School Improvement Plan (SIP) Review: Parents help develop and improve the Schoolwide Program Plan/SIP; plan posted online and available by request; parents may submit written comments if dissatisfied.
Annual Evaluation: Conducted with meaningful parent involvement at the end of each school year via meetings and/or surveys; results used to improve engagement policies and programs.
Parent Workshops & Resources
To strengthen home-school partnerships, workshops may include:
- Understanding district and state assessments
- Grade-level proficiency expectations
- Content-specific awareness events
Communication of Events: Email, PTO updates, school newsletter & website, ParentSquare, reader board, weekly updates.
Parent Input Opportunities: Surveys after events; pre-planning feedback.
Staff Training: Value & Utility of Working with Parents
Annually, all staff will be trained on the value of parent contributions, effective communication and collaboration strategies, coordinating parent programs, and building relationships. Parents will be invited to help shape training content.
Support for Parental Involvement
Marcus Whitman Elementary will provide reasonable support, such as evening events and child care assistance during activities.
